Our Favourite Historic Gems in Rockhampton
Rockhampton is one of the oldest cities in Queensland, and as such has a rich history. You can explore the historic infrastructure that made Central Queensland whether you have a whole day or just an hour - there’s something for you.
Archer Park Rail Museum
Archer Park Rail Museum conveniently located a couple blocks from CityWalk features a rare Purrey steam tram. One of the last of its kind in the world, housed in a breathtakingly restored 1899 railway station. The interactive soundscape brings the Rocky rail travel to life.

Established in 1894, the Rockhampton School of Arts Building, housed one of Queensland’s oldest public libraries and was a hub for education. Tucked into East Street, it is now home to exhibitions and community events, while retaining its Victorian charm.
St Joseph’s Cathedral’s
Completed in the early 1900s, St Joseph’s Cathedral’s striking Gothic Revival-style features locally quarried sandstone and stunning stained-glass windows imported from France. Offering a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful architecture often overlooked by visitors focused on outdoor attractions.

Customs House
The heritage listed Customs House is a symbol of Rockhampton’s historical importance as a river port in the late 19th century. The building reflects the wealth brought about by the gold rush and agricultural industry that made Central Queensland what it is. Located on Quay Street in the beautifully renovated Riverside Precinct, it is a standout stop.
